Here’s what’s happening at the MHS Guidance and College Success Office.
Seniors and parents, you may turn your Balfour cap and gown orders in to Mrs. Parkins
who will get those to the Balfour representative.
Beginning fall 2020, thousands of Tennessee students will be able to attend a UT campus
in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Martin or Memphis free of tuition and mandatory fees—thanks to UT
Promise. The new undergraduate scholarship program is available to qualifying students with a
family household income less than $50,000 a year and provides them with a volunteer mentor to
help ensure a successful student experience. UT Promise is the first wide-scale program for free
college at a public four-year institution in Tennessee. Separate applications for UT Promise are
available at each university’s website.
Gates Scholarship is now accepting applications. To be eligible seniors must meet the
following:
•From at least one of the following ethnicities: African American, American Indian/Alaska
Native*, Asian/Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American
•Pell-eligible
•A US citizen, national, or permanent resident
•A minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
Additionally, seniors must plan to enroll full-time, in a four-year degree program, at a US,
accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university. Go to

The Tennessee Concrete Association invites students ages 16-18 to enter its annual essay
contest. Winners can earn up to $250. Go to www.tnconcrete.org for information or see Mrs.
Parkins. Deadline is January 24, 2020.
Seniors who plan to enroll in a four-year college and whose family’s adjusted gross
income is $55,000 or less, and have at least a 2.0 GPA may be eligible to apply for the Horatio
Alger Association Scholarship. To learn more and to apply, visit scholars.horatioalger.org by
October 25.
All seniors will get the opportunity to take or retake the ACT for free on October 29,
2019, through a state initiative. The test will be given to seniors only on October 29, during the
school day. Registration by seniors is not necessary.
The 2020 Coca-Cola Scholars application is now open. The deadline to apply is 5 pm
EST on Tuesday, October 31. To apply go to Cokeurl.com/Apply2019 .

UT Knox Orange Preview Day is Sept. 28 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Go to
visit.UTK.edu for more information.
UTM Preview Days will be Oct. 19 & Nov. 16. Go to www.utm.edu or call 731-881-
7020 to register.
Mississippi State Preview Days are Oct. 14, Nov. 11, and Nov. 25. Registration goes live
Sept. 16, and the cost is $10 for high school juniors or seniors. Go to admissions.msstate.edu to

UT Chattanooga Preview Day is Nov. 9. Go to utc.edu to register.
